Each year in America, millions of travelers get away from their daily routines and take flight to a number of different illustrious vacation destinations around the world. Some may go to a tropical island in the Caribbean to relax on the beach, while others may want to see how different cultures live and venture to the Far East. These are very attractive choices, but some of the most popular vacation destinations are the number of European cities that hold historical significance for so many Americans. A number of Americans have ancestors that came from these European countries and to visit these cities and towns in which they came from is not only a vacation, but also a look back in history at towns that have been around for thousands of years.
One of these European cities that is so often visited by Americans each year is Venice, Italy. Venice is a city in Northern Italy that is stretched across many islands and is home to 271,251 Italians. It is most known for its classic Renaissance architecture and beautiful landscape.
However, the attraction Venice is most known for is its world famous canal system. In this system, many of the main passageways are in fact water canals and the only way through the city streets are by boat. While most of the boats used on the waterways now are motorized waterbuses, the traditional boat is called a gondola. Gondolas are long rowing boats in which the drivers use as taxis to take passengers around the canals. This is because many tourists choose to travel by gondolas because of the historical significance.
Before any American traveler has thoughts of riding around the waterways of Venice and seeing all the historical sights, they have to find a flight to Venice.
